The deadline to make a contribution to your IRA account and for it to be counted in the 2011 tax year is April 17, 2012. You can contribute to an existing IRA account or open a self directed IRA account by April 17, 2012 and take an IRA contribution tax deduction on your 2011 tax return. The IRA deadline falls on the same day that your tax return for 2011 is due. This year April 15 falls on a Sunday and Monday April 16 happens to be a holiday.
